Oreo balls are the tastiest things I’ve had in a while. Miranda, a coworker and friend, brought some in to the office a while ago and everyone instantly became hooked. After spending weeks thinking and asking about them, she agreed to make a couple of batches with me!
Prep Time: 1 hour, inactive prep time: 2 hours, cook time: 0 minutes
Yield: 24 pieces
- 1 package of Oreo cookies
- 1 8oz brick of Philly cream cheese
- 6oz milk, white or dark chocolate
The majority of the prep time consists of waiting around while the Oreo balls freeze. You can easily scale the recipe without adding too much extra prep time, so go ahead and make a ton. Trust me, you’ll be happy you did.
While these are called Oreo Balls, I guess that any other chocolate wafer cookie with a cream filling could be used. We made two batches, one using original Oreo cookies and a second with Oreo cookies filled with mint cream.
A food processor or spice grinder will come in handy when making Oreo balls. The cookies must be broken down to a fine consistency, and this can take 45 minutes or so if you’re doing it by hand. Get your hands on a food processor or something similar, place the cookies inside and pulse until broken down in to fine pieces.
When the cookies look like this, you’re ready for the next step.
Once the cookies have been broken down, add the entire brick of cream cheese in to the bowl. Leaving the cream cheese on the counter to warm up for about 30 minutes prior to use makes it a lot easier to work with.
Combine the Oreo cookies and cream cheese with your hands until they are thoroughly combined and have a texture similar to cookie dough.
Using a tablespoon, scoop the cookie and cream cheese mixture out of the bowl and roll in to balls with the palms of your hands. The mixture is very moist and will stick, so it’s best to try and make each ball as quick as possible. The heat from your hands will cause the balls to become soft and loose shape if you take too much time.
Here is a photo of the Oreo balls we made. The ones made using the mint cookies are on the left and the ones made using the original Oreo cookies are on the right. There was much more cream in the middle of the mint cookies, and this caused their texture to be very different from the original ones.
Arrange the Oreo balls on to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and place in the freezer for about 2 hours, or until they are cold and have hardened considerably. Begin melting your chocolate about 20 minutes before you are ready to begin dipping your Oreo balls.
Here is another closeup of the Oreo balls. While great when coated in chocolate, they are equally delicious on their own – even if just a bit less appetizing. The sort of look like the asteroids from Armageddon, except filled with chocolaty goodness and not space rocks or Bruce Willis.
The heat of the melted chocolate can cause the Oreo balls to break down if you take too much time dipping them, so be sure to let each be in the chocolate for no more than 5 seconds or so. This sounds like a short amount of time, but is enough to completely coat each Oreo ball.
We decided to dip our Oreo balls in white and milk chocolate, and dress them up in tuxedos for the Oscars. We placed extra chocolate after dipping in to squeeze bottles, and used them to draw bow ties and buttons on each Oreo ball.
So there you go, Oreo balls all dressed up for the Oscars. I think that we are going to try making Oreo balls again in a few weeks, in pastel colors, just in time for Easter. I have a feeling that we’ll also be making some homemade peeps too!
Bonus: Miranda sings Aerosmith!
